The department oversees building services, plan review, the Permit Center, erosion control, local code compliance, solid waste management, landfill, recycling, waste reduction, water and sewer administration, and the EcoComplex. St. Stephens Branch Library

St. Stephens Branch Library hours to be adjusted. Hours at the St. Stephens Branch Library will be reduced on Thursday evenings, as of March 11, 2010. The branch will close at 6 p.m. rather than 8 p.m. on Thursdays. The change is due to a reduction in staff. Full story

Food manufacturer, distributor, announces 500 new jobs at Claremont facility. Pierre Foods, Inc., has selected its existing manufacturing facility in Claremont, N.C. for a project that will maintain more than 700 jobs and create 500 new jobs over the next three years, with an investment of more than $16.8 million. Catawba County ranks as one of the healthiest counties in North Carolina. The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute's County Health Rankings are the first to rank the overall health of the counties in all 50 states – more than 3,000 total counties– by using a standard formula to measure how healthy people are and how long they live. Photo of firefighters on scene of an emergency FEMA grant will help pay to improve fire and rescue radio communications in Catawba County. A partnership of all 14 fire departments and all 5 rescue squads in the county with Catawba County Emergency Services has resulted in a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that will fund a large amount of the costs to purchase new radios to significantly improve communications between the fire and rescue agencies and the County’s 911 Communications Center.
